Public Sight-in Day

The East Grand Forks Rod and Gun Club will be holding three public sight in days for North Dakota and Minnesota hunters. These days will give non-members access to the club to sight-in their rifles for the upcoming hunting season.

Females for Firearms will be assisting community members by use of spotting scope, as well as checking members in and providing refreshments. This is an excellent way to promote awareness of our group in the community. See our facebook event page.

The public sight-in days will be Tuesday, October 13th, 6pm until dark as well as Saturday, October 17 and Saturday, October 24, 9am - 6pm. Assistance is particularly requested for Saturday the 24th.

If you are interesting in assisting, please contact Females for Firearms advisor Morgan Stroh.

Welcome Back!

Hello ladies!

We've got a lot of exciting things planned for the 2009-2010 school year, we hope that you can be part of them. Our first meeting this year will be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 7:30pm in Ryan Hall. This will be a brief introductory-style meeting to get our newest members acquainted with our organization and our membership, and to answer any questions members might have.

The following meeting will include elections for this year's leadership, to be held Tuesday, October 6, 7:30pm in Ryan Hall. We hope to see you there!

A candy bar sent me here...

Our members and supporters can be found all across campus and the community fundraising for this year's Firearm Familiarity Day. We are selling candy bars and distributing information about Females for Firearms and Firearm Familiarity Day 2009. If you are visiting our webpage for the first time, welcome and thank you for supporting our cause.

What is Females for Firearms?

Females for Firearms is a University of North Dakota student organization founded to encourage women to participate in the generally male-dominated world of firearms. We seek to promote firearm safety and knowledge, self-protection, participation in shooting sports, and to defend firearm rights both on and off campus.

We keep all of our events beginner-friendly, while encouraging participation from those with higher levels of expertise. Though we are Females for Firearms, men are always welcome and encouraged to join our group and attend our events.

If you have facebook, please join our group.

What is Firearm Familiarity Day?

Firearm Familiarity Day is an event intended to teach the basics of gun safety and to remove the fear-of-the-unknown surrounding firearms by providing students with a better understanding of them. Our goals are to stress the proper handling of firearms, as well as range etiquette. Our top priority is that this day furthers awareness of how to be safe and responsible around firearms. This year will be our second annual Familiarity Day. (You can see pictures from last year's Firearm Familiarity Day here.)

University of North Dakota students will be given a chance to learn about and shoot a few rounds from several different categories of firearms, including rimfires, cowboy-action, black powder, military-style rifles, bolt-action rifles, pistols, revolvers, and shotguns.

We will also be offering reduced price conceal carry permit opportunities for those students who are already experienced with handguns. A Utah conceal carry course (21+) will be offered during the morning of Firearm Familiarity Day and the North Dakota conceal carry exam (18+) will be available throughout the day.

Last year, more than 50 students attended and we are hoping this year will be an even greater success. The event will be held on Reading and Review Day (Friday, May 8th, 2009) at the East Grand Forks Rod and Gun Club. Registration is required in order to attend.

What else does Females for Firearms do?

In the past two years we have protested the on-campus apartments weapons policy change, assisted the Forks Friends of NRA banquet, taken several trips to the range, introduced members to trap and skeet, attended a conceal carry course, traveled to Kentucky for the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot (though it was rained out, we did still get to meet Larry Pratt!), and much, much more.

If you would like to learn more about Females for Firearms or Firearm Familiarity Day, please contact Aly Snyder for more information.

Events on campus: March

The UND Federalist Society will be hosting Robert Levy of the Cato Institute on Thursday, March 12th, at 12:15pm in the Baker Courtroom (3rd floor of the law school). Robery Levy was co-counsel in the landmark DC v. Heller case that held that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for private use.

Mr. Levy will speak about the lawsuit and its implications for gun ownership across the country. We hope you can make it. If we don't see you, good luck on midterms and have a safe Spring Break!
